Trunks is a series of up-close and personal “family portraits” of real life San Francisco tree trunks. Formal elements of painting, such as: color, texture, temperature, line and form, are vital to the portrayal of these characters. What is the maximum saturation of color I (the painter) can get away with, while maintaining a believable trunk? How does the texture from tree to tree vary, and how can that be conveyed with paint? What mood does each trunk encompass, and how does that relate to color? What is the appropriate balance between harsh and melted lines? Which shapes are important in understanding the trunk, and which ones are irrelevant? Trunks plays with these investigations while appreciating the beauty of each tree’s unique creation.
